The following information is meant for people, who had to flee for humanitarian, legal or political reasons and would like to study or to continue studies they had to interrupt. The International Office of Fachhochschule Westküste – University of Applied Sciences (FHW, FH Westküste) gives advice to everyone who is interested in studying and has qualifications from abroad. However, the available options can depend on your residence status.
Anyone who is interested in studying at Fachhochschule Westküste - University of Applied Sciences can apply directly to the university during the application phases. The dates, as well as the documents which need to accompany the application and the required language certificates are named on this website below via „Information for students with a refugee-background“ and in our Manual for Incoming International Students which can be downloaded from the International Office’s Download-Page (English Version).
If you don't have your documents entirely available in Germany due to reasons connected with your escape and if you are not sure whether your documents are sufficient for studying at the FHW, please make an appointment with the team of the International Office or visit us during our open office hours. If you are looking for general information regarding Studying for Refugees, we recommend the website www.study-in.de/en/refugees (run by the DAAD). Study-In.de provides you with information about the fields of study and the university system in Germany, as well as with hints for accompanying topics, such as financing or accommodation.
The Gesellschaft für Akademische Studienvorbereitung und Testentwicklung e.V. (g.a.s.t.) offers an online language placement test „onSET for Refugees“. The test helps refugees with interest in studying to assess their respective language level. It is available under refugees.onset.de/en for the languages German and English. Under „Who Can Take the onSET for Refugees“ you can find out if you are eligible. In order to access the test you will have to submit a document that verifies your residence status. After having proved that you meet the criteria you can take the test free of charge.
Please take into account, that ’’onSET for Refugees’’ cannot be used for applications to our courses of study. Its purpose is to help you assess your current level for your further planning!
Applicants with a refugee-background are asked to prove at first, if they are able to apply with the regular documents for applicants with non-German school or university careers (Link: https://en.fh-westkueste.de/international/incoming-students/international-applicants/).
Please do not send us original certificates, as rejected applications will be destroyed!
If certificates of the regular requirements for applicants with non-German school or university careers are missing due to the escape, applicants with a flight-background, who stay in Germany with a political asylum or a right of residence according to § 25 Absatz 1 AufenthaltsG, § 25 Absatz 2 Alternative 1 AufenthaltsG, § 25 Absatz 2 Alternative 1 AufenthaltsG, § 25 Absatz 3 AufenthaltsG, § 22 Sätze 1 and 2 AufenhaltsG, § 23 Absätze 1 and 2 AufenhaltsG, § 24 AufenthaltsG, § 25 AsylVfG or § 60a AufenthaltsG, hand in the following documents in a certified copy as well as in a certified German or English translation for a „Plausibilitätsprüfung“ according to paragraph 1 until 3 of the “Erlass des Ministeriums für Soziales, Gesundheit, Wissenschaft und Gleichstellung des Landes Schleswig-Holsteins“ (Decree of the Ministry for Health, Welfare, Science and Gender Equality of Schleswig-Holstein) dated the 29th June 2016:
a) Curriculum Vitae in tabular form with your complete educational biography (Periods of time, cities, schools, universites etc.) and
b) School leaving certificate, which gives you the right to study in the home country, including a list of subjects with grades, and/ or
c) Certificate of a passed university entrance exam and/ or
d) Student card and/ or
e) Study record and/ or
f) Transcripts of records and/ or
g) Other documents, which gives you the right to study in the home country
h) A certified copy of your residence permit
If the right to study cannot be proved by sufficient documents according the above mentioned „Plausibilitätsprüfung“, the following documents in a certified copy as well as in a certified German or English translation are accepted for declaratory proceedings (Feststellungsverfahren) according to Absatz 4 of the “Erlass des Ministeriums für Soziales, Gesundheit, Wissenschaft und Gleichstellung des Landes Schleswig-Holsteins“ (Decree of the Ministry for Health, Welfare, Science and Gender Equality of Schleswig-Holstein) dated the 29th June 2016:
- TestAS certificate with a default value of a minimum of 95 points at the main test, as well as at the study-specific test, or
- Certificate of the so-called "Feststellungsprüfung" (final exam of a Studienkolleg) or
- Professional qualifications by a sufficient apprenticeship from the home country, which is officially accepted in Germany and gives you the right to study without a high-school leaving exam
Regardless of these certificates, the necessary language skills for each study programme have also additionally to be proved!
The Fachhochschule Westküste – University of Applied Sciences will probably be able to offer a full-time preparatory course for refugees with academic aptitude again in the winter term 2019/20. The target of the course is to qualify the participants for studying at a German university. The course will take two semesters and contain an intensive German language course as well as special lessons and information units on the German study system. The preparatory course will also prepare the participants for a two language examinations being offered as part of the programme at the levels B2 (“telc Deutsch B2”)and C1 CEFR (“telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule”). Both examinations bear a charge.
The language exam “telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule” is one of the often-required language examinations for programmes of study taught in German. The language requirements for university entries are regulated on a federal basis by the “Rahmenordnung über Deutsche Sprachprüfungen für das Studium an deutschen Hochschulen“. The certificate „telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule“ can, given all requirements are fulfilled, enable the participants to study at a German university.
